Breanna Beal commits to South Carolina, boosts Dawn Staley's growing recruiting class

South Carolina got its second impact recruit of the week when Breanna Beal, a 6-foot senior wing at Rock Island (Illinois) and the No. 13 prospect in the espnW HoopGurlz Top 100, gave a verbal commitment to the Gamecocks on Thursday. Beal made the announcement on her 18th birthday.

Beal, the two-time reigning Gatorade Player of the Year in Illinois, chose South Carolina over Michigan, Illinois and Louisville.

A physical and versatile guard, Beal averaged 21.9 points, 10.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 3.0 blocks and 2.9 assists per game as a junior. She can take defenders off the dribble and score in traffic or hit a jumper to the arc.

On Monday, coach Dawn Staley got a verbal commitment from No. 7 prospect Zia Cooke.

Beal's commitment might not be the last we hear from Staley and the Gamecocks between now and the early signing period, which opens Nov. 14 and runs through Nov. 21.

Four top-20 prospects remain undeclared. All four -- No. 1 Haley Jones, No. 3 Aliyah Boston, No. 9 Rickea Jackson and No. 10 Laeticia Amihere -- list South Carolina among their finalists.
