New categories unveiled for The 2002 ESPY Awards

Press Release

The 2002 ESPY Awards Presented by General Motors and Morgan Stanley, the 10th annual edition of the industry-wide celebration of sports, will not only have a new time of year (July) and a new site (Hollywood’s Kodak Theatre), the event will feature some significant enhancements to the award categories. Overall, category names have been changed to “Best …” (e.g. - “Best Baseball Player”) from “…Of the Year” (e.g. - “Baseball Player of the Year”) to more accurately reflect the July timing.

Also, new awards have been added such as Best Disabled Athlete, Best Outdoors Sports Athlete and Best Sports Movie, while certain categories have been narrowed or broadened. A total of 34 awards will be presented, including several that pit nominees from different sports against each other (cross-cutter awards) and the Arthur Ashe Courage Award.

The 2002 ESPY Awards will again recognize the best sports achievements and performers since the last ESPY Awards (February 2001). Therefore, based on the new July date, award nominees for the 2002 event (only) will be considered from a time period spanning more than a year, and for some sports, more than one season. Nominees will be announced in June and winners will be determined by the ESPY Awards Academy, a collection of legendary athletes and nationally recognized broadcast and print journalists.
