Brazilian MMA expanding, exciting fights are on the way

The Brazilian MMA scene is growing and the number of events sprouting up almost daily is tangible proof. Most of these events are well organized, bringing more and more great athletes to the growing sport. These new fighters, who are just cutting their MMA teeth, will be coming to an international stage soon before you know it so pay attention.

Storm promotes a heavyweight tournament

Under the direction of Master Rafael Cordeiro, Storm Samurai will host its next event on July 28 in Curitiba. It will showcase heavyweight talent in a tournament format. Athletes from the greatest Brazilian MMA teams, such as Chute Boxe, BTT and Black House will be looking to take home the coveted tournament crown.

One of the attractions of the upcoming tournament is the use of North American Unified rules, such as those used by the UFC, as well as fights held in a UFC-sized octagon.

The event will be broadcast by the Web site www.mmawl.com.

Fury FC 4 is building its card

Fury FC will stage their fourth installment on August 4 in Teresópolis. The event will feature an 83-kg tournament. Fighters such as PRIDE Bushido veteran Daniel Acacio, Rousimar Palhares and Eduardo Pamplona will vie for the Fury FC tournament title.

The eight participants have been named but brackets have yet to be set.

Vitória wil hold MMA event in August

The inaugural edition of Open Fight will be held on Aug. 4 in Vitoria. With experienced athletes such as Eduardo Jamelão, Leonardo Peçanha, Rodrigo Riscado, Eduardo Maiorino and Johil de Oliveira scheduled to appear, it could get interesting.

Jaoude and "Minotoro" to compete in the Pan American games

Rio de Janeiro is the host city for the 2007 Pan American Games which run through July 29. Two experienced MMA athletes will compete in amateur sports and they both have chances to win medals. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira will be boxing in the super heavyweight class (over 91kg), probably starting July 20. "Minotoro" has dedicated himself exclusively to this competition and he will only fight MMA once the games have come to a close.

Antoine Jaoude is the best wrestler Brazil has to offer and he will take to the free-style wrestling mat July 28 in the under-96kg class. Jaoude spent a few weeks in Bulgaria training specifically for this competition before returning to train with the Brazilian wrestling team. Jaoude won the 2003 Pan American Games silver medal.

"Macaco" expects amazing fight against "Ximu" at the Predador

Jorge "Macaco" Patino will face Gustavo "Ximu" Machado on August 25 in the Predador FC 6, in São Paulo. This will be a rematch of their 2002 clash which saw "Ximu" notch the submission win with a heel hook.

"His attitude, giving me the rematch let me be happy, I enjoyed this," said Patino. "I'll train a lot to please the fans. I'm sure we will give a great show."

"Macaco" showed he is in tremendous shape by winning the International Master Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu championship two weeks ago.

"Pelé" trains for Bodog

José "Pelé" Landi-Jons is in Canada training hard for his October Bodog fight. The veteran who has not fought since November was scheduled to return to the ring in August but a shoulder injury delayed his bout until October.

Pelé is training alongside the Revolution Fight Team whose members include Kalib Starnes and Kultar "Black Mamba" Gill, as well as BJJ black belt Bibiano Fernandes.

The Brazilian's bout will take place in Vancouver, Canada operates a tanning system that's meant not to be aired, weight-class. A win would make him the number one contender for the Bodog belt.

Two of the best Brazilian MMA organizations will soon join forces. Storm Samurai and Predador FC will team up for a blockbuster event pitting the best both organizations have to offer against one another in what will be billed as Storm vs. Predador. …

The Brazilian Muay Thai Confederation (CBMT) paid homage to three Muay Thai instructors at their July 12 conference in São Paulo. The honorees -- Rudimar Fedrigo, Roney Alex and José Wellington Narany -- were given the title of Grand Master at the ceremony. …

The Gracie-Barra Combat Team recently disbanded when their head BJJ teacher, Roberto "Gordo" Correa, left the squad. "Gordo" took a number of the top Gracie-Barra fighters with him. Team Gordo BJJ is headlined by Marcio Cruz, Renato Sobral, Gustavo Machado and Alexandre Barros.
