PINEHURST, N.C. - It is only 9 holes, but Phil Mickelson is off to a decent start, making 2 birdies and a bogey to turn in 34. He started on the 10th hole, a par-5, where he made birdie and also followed with another at the 14th when he knocked his approach to 4 feet.
Mickelson's only birdie occurred at the par-3 15th, where all three players in the group -- Justin Rose and amateur Matthew Fitzpatrick, as well -- landed their approaches on the green and saw the ball roll off. Mickelson's pitch was too strong, and it rolled to the other side of the green, but he got up and down from there.
He hit just 4 of 7 fairways and 6 of 9 greens. Mickelson, who turns 44 on Monday, is looking to win the U.S. Open for the first time after six runner-up finishes.
