PINEHURST, NC -- Bo Van Pelt battled on Friday to his second straight 72 for a 4-over total in the second round of the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2. The 39-year-old tour veteran looked both tired and relieved after he made a long par save at the 18th hole to secure his spot this weekend.
Van Pelt's par save came after three consecutive bogeys. He couldn't get off the course fast enough.
So he was flabbergasted to see that Martin Kaymer was 10-under after two consecutive 65s with an enormous 8-shot lead at the time.
"Tiger Woods 2000 is here," said Van Pelt, referencing Tiger's 15-stroke win in the 2000 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. "He just looks like Martin Kaymer this week.
"I thought about 2-under would be leading after 36 holes; 10-under is stupid. I could see one day at 4- or 5-under, but to back it up is historic."
