Jason Sobel ESPN Senior Writer

With the U.S. leading 4-0, here are this afternoon's fourballs (best-ball) matches: Jordan Spieth/Patrick Reed vs. Justin Rose/Henrik Stenson J.B. Holmes/Ryan Moore vs. Sergio Garcia/Rafa Cabrera-Bello Brandt Snedeker/Brooks Koepka vs. Martin Kaymer/Danny Willett Dustin Johnson/Matt Kuchar vs. Rory McIlroy/Thomas Pieters

Bob Harig @BobHarig

For U.S., no Rickie, Phil, Zach or Walker in the afternoon. Europe is sitting Chris Wood, Matt Fitpatrick, Westwood and Sullivan

Here's what a DOMINATING scoreboard in the U.S. team's favor looks like. Only one match went the distance. If the U.S. is going to win back the Ryder Cup, this was exactly the start they were hoping for. Now the questions becomes; Who plays the afternoon session for each team? Can the momentum continue for the American side?

Jason Sobel @JasonSobelESPN

That's gotta be some sweet vindication for Rickie Fowler. Criticized for being a pick, criticized for no previous RC wins. Finally gets one.

USA 4-0 over Europe in the morning matches as Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler hold off Rory McIlroy and Andy Sullivan 1up in the final morning match!!!!

Jason Sobel ESPN Senior Writer

Maybe the U.S. team has just been saving it up all these years. For the first time since 1975, the Americans made it a clean sweep in the opening session, winning all four matches to take a commanding early Ryder Cup lead.

ESPN Stats and Information

No team has led 4-0 after the first session of the Ryder Cup since the current U.S.-against-Europe format began in 1979. The only times a team has ever led 4-0 after the first session was in 1975 and 1947. The U.S. led 4-0 on both occasions and went on to win the Ryder Cup both times.

Michael Collins ESPN Senior Writer

Zach Johnson and Jimmy Walker win five holes in a row to close out Sergio Garcia and Martin Kaymer 4 and 2!! That's USA 3 Europe 0 with one match left on the 18th green.

Michael Collins ESPN Senior Writer

Two matches left on the course and the U.S. Team has a chance for a shutout of the morning session! A 4-0 lead could have a huge psychological affect on the European side for the four afternoon matches.

Kevin Maguire Golf

If the U.S. can hold on to win this Phil Mickelson/Rickie Fowler vs. Rory McIlroy/Andy Sullivan match, it would be a 4-0 sweep at the Ryder Cup to start Day 1 in morning foursomes. That would be the first U.S. sweep of a session since 1981, when the Americans defeated Team Europe at the end of the week, 18 1/2 to 9 1/2, to win at Walton Heath in England.

Michael Collins ESPN Senior Writer

Ryder Cup rookie Andy Sullivan picks the wrong time to hit a nervy shot. His 8 iron on the par three 17th hole finds a watery grave which turns into the third lost hole in a row for Sullivan and Rory McIlroy who now find themselves 1 down to Rickie Fowler and Phil Mickelson on the 18th tee!

Michael Collins ESPN Senior Writer

Martin Kaymer flubs a chip shot on the 15th hole and it costs he a Sergio Garcia. That four in a row for Jimmy Walker and Zach Johnson who now have a 3up lead with three to play!!

trey wingo @wingoz

USA has already won more alternate shot matches this Ryder Cup than they did in all of 2014

Michael Collins ESPN Senior Writer

Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar put the second American point on the board with a commanding 5 and 4 victory over Lee Westwood and Thomas Pieters. U.S. 2 Europe 0 with two matches still on the course.

Jason Sobel @JasonSobelESPN

Another point for U.S.: Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar steamroll Lee Westwood and Thomas Pieters. DJ: "That was a lot of fun." No kidding.
