Now

Steven Saunders ESPN UK

Zach Johnson takes the clubhouse lead with a glorious birdie putt on the 18th. But, with the weather expected to improve later this afternoon, his 6-under 136 will be a mark that a few people will be aiming to beat.

Steven Saunders ESPN UK

Tommy Fleetwood shot a second-round 65, but he had to explain away his "borrowed" umbrella -- an official Open umbrella available in the shop. "We stole it!" he joked. "We got one given for free, actually. We didn't steal it. We don't always carry an umbrella. See, we don't have a sponsor. So it just so happens this week that we've got a nice Open Championship brolly. It looked quite nice, the yellow and the course."

Eric Lundsten ESPN Producer

World #1 Dustin Johnson probably wishes Carnoustie only had 17 holes. Johnson was 5-over on just the 18th hole over two rounds and his tournament has come to a close with a total score of +6

Nick Pietruszkiewicz ESPN.com

Dustin Johnson won't be here for the weekend, and he has the 18th hole to blame. He tripled it on Thursday, then doubled it Friday.

Nick Pietruszkiewicz ESPN.com

Rory McIlroy follows his opening-round 69 with another on Friday. He handled the conditions well and will be in the mix on the weekend as he chases his second Claret Jug.

Michael Collins ESPN Senior Writer

Something cool the R&A does everyday... Course Set-Up Notes. Here's Friday's:

Nick Pietruszkiewicz ESPN.com

Tommy Fleetwood, a popular choice to win The Open, made his big move Friday, shooting 6-under 65. His day in the rain is done, and he exits Carnoustie with a share of the lead.

Round 2 hole locations!!

Tiger Woods fails to birdie another par-5 at Carnoustie. In his terminator days, he made his living on par-5s. Tiger needs to do better than par-par-par if he's going to win another major here or anywhere.

Nick Pietruszkiewicz ESPN.com

Rory McIlroy dropped in another birdie and is tied for the lead. Think the field will take notice with his name at the top of the board?

Nick Pietruszkiewicz ESPN.com

That didn't take long. As soon as it looked like Tiger Woods was in trouble, he rattles off consecutive birdies to right himself early in Round 2 at Carnoustie.

Tom Hamilton Senior Writer, ESPN UK

The ferocity of the finishing straight here at Carnoustie has been well-publicized and with good reason, too. In Round 1, the 16th was the hardest on the course, with the 17th following ranked third and the 18th fourth. But do not underestimate hole 12. That came in second-hardest yesterday and no one has yet birdied it today in Round 2 with Michael Hendry succumbing to a triple bogey.

Matt Cooper Special to ESPN.com

Zach Johnson continues to make smart progress in round two. He's currently 4-under for the tournament through 11 holes. He made one top 20 in his first seven Opens, but has ticked off six in the last seven and said after the first round: "I've embraced what this tournament is all about: using the ground, trying to be somewhat creative."

Bob Harig ESPN Senior Writer

Justin Thomas was -2 and in contention through 5 holes. Then he went 7-6-5 -- double, double, double -- and shot a front-nine 42 to drop to +4 and outside the projected cut line.

Nick Pietruszkiewicz ESPN.com

Tiger Woods is headed the wrong way early in Round 2 at Carnoustie. It's about time to start Cut Watch.

Bob Harig @BobHarig

Tiger had about 140 left to the second and managed to get it on the green ... will have about 30 feet for par. #TheOpen

Bob Harig @BobHarig

Rory now -2 today and tied for second after birdie at the 10th. Leader Kevin Kisner not off until 12:53 local time

Nick Pietruszkiewicz ESPN.com

Tiger Woods made a good run at birdie at the first, but settles for par. Even though it is raining, the conditions have softened the course. There are chances out, so players could make moves today in Round 2.

Bob Harig ESPN Senior Writer

Tiger Woods has started his second round at The Open. His first-round 71 was his best opening score at a major since he shot 69 in the first round at Royal Liverpool in 2014. That was his first major event following his first back surgery. Including that tournament, this is just his ninth major start going back to the start of 2014.

Bob Harig @BobHarig

The first rainy day in Scotland. Zach Johnson, Rory, Tommy Fleetwood making early moves. Tiger about to tee off #TheOpen

Nick Pietruszkiewicz ESPN.com

The unpleasant conditions are not a bother to former Open champion Zach Johnson, who has responded after a bogey at the first to post three birdies and move into second place.
