Matt Cooper Special to ESPN.com

The phrase "Hogan's Alley" connects this week's venue Carnoustie with Colonial Country Club, host venue for the Dean & Deluca Invitational, one of Kevin Kisner's two PGA Tour career victories (in 2017). The Texan club is known as that in honor of five-time champion Ben Hogan and this week's sixth hole also holds that title in deference to the great man's line of attack on the par-5. Kisner has signed for a second round 70 and a 6-under 136 halfway total that ties Zach Johnson's clubhouse lead.

Michael Collins ESPN Senior Writer

Even the caddies are stressed. Friday, one looper told me, "When we got to the 3rd tee Thursday, there were only three clubs that were NOT an option. Putter, lob wedge, and sand wedge. The other 11, were ALL in play."

Steven Saunders ESPN UK

Scotland's own Sandy Lyle signs off what is likely his final ever round at The Open in fine style, rolling in a lengthy putt on 18 for birdie. The 60-year-old will no longer be exempt after this year for his 1985 triumph at Royal St George's, which was the first by a Briton for 16 years. That seemed like a drought then, yet the current run stands at 19 years.

Michael Collins ESPN Senior Writer

"Looks like I got the wrong side of the draw this year... Wish my tee time was now." A player said to me walking to his car looking back at a now rainless, windless Carnoustie.

Steven Saunders ESPN UK

Encouragement for the rest of the field looking up at the top of the leaderboard: In seven Opens at Carnoustie, none of the nine golfers who held at least a share of the halfway lead ended up winning the tournament (per ESPN Stats and Information).

David Duval, the 2001 Open champion, has withdrawn due to illness. It is the second time in three years that Duval has withdrawn after one round at The Open. He shot a nine-over 80 on Thursday.

Bob Harig ESPN Senior Writer

No. 1-ranked Dustin Johnson will not be around for the weekend at Carnoustie. After opening with a 76, he could do no better than 72 Friday and finished at +6 and will miss the 36-hole cut. Since holding a four-shot lead through 36 holes at the U.S. Open last month, Johnson has shot scores of 77-70-76-72. He finished third at the U.S. Open, two strokes behind winner Brooks Koepka.

Tom Hamilton Senior Writer, ESPN UK

Zach Johnson posted a four-under 67 today to sit at six-under after two rounds at Carnoustie, but he will not hold any clout in the house he is sharing with six of the other American players. The rule is, winner has to pay for the private jet home but would Johnson be happy with second place to dodge that financial outlay? "No," was the succinct answer.

Nick Pietruszkiewicz ESPN.com

Tiger Woods with a tap-in birdie at No. 14 to get to 1 under. If he can stay there over the difficult finishing holes, he'll do something hasn't done in a long while. According to ESPN Stats & Information, it's been 1,197 days since Woods entered the weekend at a major under par.

Tiger finally taking advantage of a par-5. Has an eagle putt at the 14th from about 20 feet after finding the front of the green #TheOpen

Eric Lundsten ESPN Producer

Phil Mickelson, wearing gloves on each hand Friday to deal with the rain, just rolled in a long birdie on the 4th hole to climb back to even for the Open Championship

Steven Saunders ESPN UK

Zach Johnson takes the clubhouse lead with a glorious birdie putt on the 18th. But, with the weather expected to improve later this afternoon, his 6-under 136 will be a mark that a few people will be aiming to beat.

Steven Saunders ESPN UK

Tommy Fleetwood shot a second-round 65, but he had to explain away his "borrowed" umbrella -- an official Open umbrella available in the shop. "We stole it!" he joked. "We got one given for free, actually. We didn't steal it. We don't always carry an umbrella. See, we don't have a sponsor. So it just so happens this week that we've got a nice Open Championship brolly. It looked quite nice, the yellow and the course."

Eric Lundsten ESPN Producer

World #1 Dustin Johnson probably wishes Carnoustie only had 17 holes. Johnson was 5-over on just the 18th hole over two rounds and his tournament has come to a close with a total score of +6

Nick Pietruszkiewicz ESPN.com

Dustin Johnson won't be here for the weekend, and he has the 18th hole to blame. He tripled it on Thursday, then doubled it Friday.

Nick Pietruszkiewicz ESPN.com

Rory McIlroy follows his opening-round 69 with another on Friday. He handled the conditions well and will be in the mix on the weekend as he chases his second Claret Jug.
