Sergio Garcia and Martin Kaymer took a 1 up lead on the second hole and have held that same lead now thru 10. Jimmy Walker and Zach Johnson need to start getting more aggressive if they're going to square the match.

Rory McIlroy and Andy Sullivan square their match against Rickie Fowler and Phil Mickelson with a par at the 11th. This match could well determine whether or not the U.S. leads or is tied after the morning matches.

Jason Sobel @JasonSobelESPN

When Arnold Palmer was U.S. captain in 1975, he told his team the night before, "I don't want them to make a point." Love that mentality.

Sergio Garcia has definitely taken up the mantle for Ian Poulter on the European Team. As his par putt dropped into the hole on the 9th green, Garcia slowly pumped his fist while eyeballing the crowd almost daring the U.S. biased spectators to remain quiet. Garcia and Kaymer remain 1up thru 9 holes vs. Jimmy Walker and Zach Johnson.

Ryder Cup heckler thankful to have sunk putt

U.S. fan David Johnson talks to the SportsCenter crew about taking the challenge to sink a putt at the Ryder Cup practice session after badgering the European team members.

Jim "Bones'' Mackay is caddying in his 11th Ryder Cup, all for Phil Mickelson, dating to the 1995 event at Oak Hill -- where Phil went 3-0. Bones started caddying for Mickelson in 1992 and was so confident in his player's abilities that he paid his own way to the 1993 Ryder Cup at The Belfry in England, slept on the floor of Joe LaCava's room (he was caddying for Fred Couples) and soaked it in."Jim figured Phil was going to be playing in a lot of Ryder Cups,'' LaCava said.

Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar are DOMINATING Lee Westwood and Thomas Pieters. DJ just dropped a birdie on the 8th to put the U.S. 5up!! This match could be over very early.

Jason Sobel @JasonSobelESPN

Dustin Johnson has been the best player in the world this year. There was no reason to think he wouldn't continue that this week.

As Danny Willett got some practice putting in before the afternoon matches, he looked over at me and said jokingly, "I hope you're not sh** talking as well." I told him, "I talk so much crap I have to blow my nose with toilet paper!" Which made him laugh. It's obvious his brother's written outburst has affected him in a very negative way. Shame because Danny is such a good guy both on and off the course.

HUGE ROAR from the 9th green that could easily be heard in the media center some 500+ yards away as Rickie Fowler chips in for birdie on the 9th hole!!! That's three holes in a row the Fowler/Phil Mickelson pair have won. They make the turn 1 up over Rory McIlroy/Andy Sullivan

Bob Harig ESPN Senior Writer

Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed are proving to be a formidable team. They went 2-0-1 at Gleneagles and so far are 3-up thru 8 over Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose -- who have yet to win a hole. The other matches: McIlroy/Sullivan 1 up thru 7 over Mickelson/Fowler Garcia/Kaymer 1-up thru 5 over Walker/Z.Johnson D.Johnson/Kuchar 3-up thru 5 over Westwood/Pieters

Michael Collins ESPN Senior Writer

Two blowouts and two tight matches in the early matches for Day 1 in the Ryder Cup. U.S. leads 3 up in two matches and the European side is winning 1 up in two matches.

Michael Collins ESPN Senior Writer

As the board shows, there are lots of ways to win holes. The Spieth/Reed combo are making birdies, while the Dustin Johnson/Matt Kuchar are making pars.

Jason Sobel @JasonSobelESPN

Rickie Fowler drives one to a fence, then Phil Mickelson turns around and hits righty. All of a sudden, we're all getting 2004 flashbacks.

Michael Collins ESPN Senior Writer

Sergio Garcia drains a bomb to save par on the 4th hole and makes a motion to the hole like, "It's going down." Let the trash talking begin!!

Michael Collins ESPN Senior Writer

You think it's a coincidence that Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed are dominating their match? Tried to tell ya...

Michael Collins ESPN Senior Writer

Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar are off to an early lead against Lee Westwood and Thomas Pieters 2up thru two holes.

Jason Sobel @JasonSobelESPN

Lee Westwood is a main character in the storyline this week. Will be expected to play 4-5 matches. Just missed a short putt. Really short.
