Prior to Branden Grace's record-setting 62 on Saturday at The Open, 63 had been shot a total of 31 times. Interestingly enough, only seven of those golfers went on to win that major (a 22 percent rate.) The odds aren't in the South African's favor. Here's a look at the historic scorecard.

ESPN Stats and Information

The 146th Open is the 442nd major championship contested. Branden Grace's 62 in the 3rd round today is the lowest score ever recorded in a major.

Michael Collins ESPN Senior Writer

"Let's get this out of the way now. I DIDN'T know on 18 what was going on." Branden Grace sits down at the podium talking about his record breaking round. "My caddie Zach came up to me after the putt dropped and said, 'Congrats, you broke the record.' I said, 'What are you talking about?'"

Jason Sobel @JasonSobelESPN

Jack Nicklaus on the record, circa 2015: "It just hasn't happened, but it will. It used to be 64. Then it became 63. And it will become 62."

Michael Collins ESPN Senior Writer

Branden Grace shoots 62, the lowest round in major championship history Saturday at The Open. Ironically enough, playing alongside Grace was Jason Dufner, who in 2013 on Friday of the PGA Championship had a 13' putt to shoot 62 that he left just short.

Jason Sobel @JasonSobelESPN

Branden Grace: "I was so in the zone. I was just trying to finish the round without a bogey. Sometimes it helps not knowing these things."

Jason Sobel ESPN Senior Writer

They've been playing major championships for 157 years. This is the 441st. There's never been a 62 -- until now. Branden Grace has done it. And it might only take a few hours for the next one. On a soft Royal Birkdale course that is hardly bothered by any weather conditions, we might see even more of them today.

Nonetheless, congrats to Branden Grace for posting a score no one ever has before... 62

THAT far away from history! Just off the back of the green at the 18th hole you can just see Branden Grace's golf ball. He needs to have it in the hole in two shots to shoot a historic 62 in a major championship here at The Open at Royal Birkdale.
