AUGUSTA, Ga. -- It's never about the money at the Masters -- at least not the prize money.
But Augusta National quietly announced that the purse for this year's event has been raised by $1 million. It marks the first time the purse has been raised since 2010.
The club will pay out $9 million, with $1.620 million going to the winner. Last year, the total purse was $8 million, and champion Adam Scott received $1.44 million.
Second place will receive $972,000 this year, with payouts down to $22,680 for 50th place.
The Masters is not, however, the highest-paying major championship. Last fall, the PGA Championship announced it would go to $10 million this year. The Players Championship will also pay $10 million this year.
When Arnold Palmer won the Masters 50 years ago, he received $20,000 for first place.
