Nigel Edwards gets third captaincy

Nigel Edwards has been reappointed captain of the Great Britain & Ireland team that will take on the United States at next year's Walker Cup, the R&A announced Thursday.

Edwards becomes the first captain in modern times to hold the position for three consecutive Walker Cups, a biennial amateur competition.

The U.S., which won the event in September at the National Golf Links on Long Island, will defend its title at Royal Lytham & St. Annes in England in 2015.

A Welshman, Edwards played on two winning GB&I Walker Cup teams before captaining the team to victory in 2011 at Royal Aberdeen in Scotland. He will also lead the GB&I team in this year's St. Andrews Trophy, a competition against continental Europe.

"I'm very proud to have the opportunity to captain the Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team for a third time in 2015,'' Edwards said. "It will also be a privilege to lead the St. Andrews Trophy team for a third time this year. Both events have long histories and we will be aiming to win back the trophies.

"I am looking forward to continuing my involvement and using my past experience as both a player and captain to make sure the players are prepared to play to the best of their ability.''
