Tiger Woods in featured group

SAN DIEGO -- Tiger Woods will be in the featured group Thursday when the Farmers Insurance Open starts on the North and South courses at Torrey Pines.

Woods, a six-time Farmers Insurance Open champion, will be paired with fellow California natives Rickie Fowler and Nick Watney, who won this event in 2009.

Woods, Fowler and Watney will start their first rounds on at 10:30 a.m. Thursday local time on the first tee at the South Course. Playing behind them will be Hunter Mahan, Bill Haas and Kyle Stanley.

Stanley will be looking for redemption after blowing a four-shot lead here last year on the 72nd hole before losing in a playoff to Brandt Snedeker.

As the defending champion, Snedeker was scheduled to headline a threesome including Bubba Watson and Phil Mickelson off the North Course's 10th tee at 9:30 a.m. local time. Watson on Thursday withdrew from the tournament, citing the flu. He will be replaced by Billy Mayfair.

Watson beat Mickelson by one shot in 2011, the year Mickelson famously had caddie Jim "Bones" Mackay tend the flag for his 72-yard wedge shot to the 18th hole. Had the lefty holed out, he would have forced a playoff with Watson.

Playing in the group ahead of Snedeker, Mayfair and Mickelson are Dustin Johnson, Keegan Bradley and Vijay Singh. Johnson won the season-opening Hyundai Tournament of Champions.

Russell Henley, who won the Sony Open earlier this month, and Brian Gay, the winner of last week's Humana Challenge, are not in the field in San Diego.
