JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- Tiger Woods started his second round on Friday at the Barclays with five consecutive 3s on his scorecard that included three birdies to jump to 7 under for the tournament.
Then he dropped two shots over his next eight holes before play at Liberty National was halted due to darkness at 7:45 p.m.
"I got off to a great start today and then lost it in the middle part of the round and made too many mistakes," Woods said. "Didn't hit any greens. Consequently, made some bogeys."
The 37-year-old 14-time major champion is 5 under for the tournament and five shots back of the leader, Matt Kuchar, who is 10 under after making five birdies through 13 holes.
For the second consecutive day, Woods struggled with a sore back, and he said it got progressively worse through the round. At the completion of play, he headed for treatment.
Because his second-round tee time was pushed back three hours to after 4 p.m. due to weather delays on Thursday, Woods will complete the 36-hole halfway mark of the event on Saturday morning, beginning at 7:30 a.m. on the 14th hole, where he has a 13-foot birdie putt.
