Hail to Mickelson's shot on No. 18

Associated Press

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- While it wasn't a good week for Phil Mickelson at the $3.5 million Williams World Challenge, his finish is sure to make golf highlights the rest of the year.

Mickelson and playing partner Mark O'Meara were on the 18th green when a rain and hail storm forced a halt in play in the final round. The two elected to finish their round by putting out.

In Mickelson's case it was chip out.

With the green covered by hail, Mickelson used his L-wedge to pitch a 25-footer into the cup for birdie and a final round of 70 -- his best of the tournament.

"I just needed a few obstacles," said Mickelson, who had struggled through previous rounds of 72, 74 and 72 on his home course.

Mickelson said he decided to chip instead of try to putt after watching O'Meara, who had trouble getting the ball to roll through the hail. He four-putted from about 30 feet.

"The chip-putt was the shot of my year," Mickelson said.

Before hitting the shot, Mickelson first had to find the spot where he had marked his ball. That wasn't easy either.

"And I only had about four and a half minutes left," he said.
