SoCal Sectionals '11: Siera Thompson had the type of Southern Section run that had coaches and scouts scrambling back to check the Serra roster. Is she really just a sophomore? Is this Sierra and not her sister, Simone, who is a year older with a reputation as a long-distance shooter? Legitimate questions all, since Sierra Thompson probably had biggest games of any individual player. In a tournament that included the aforementioned elite 2011 and 2012 prospects, that's saying a lot. After scoring 28 points against Diamond Ranch (Pomona, Calif.) during a Division IIIAA semifinal, she dropped another 28 on favorite St. Joseph (Santa Maria, Calif.) in the championship game. Not only that, she made eight of 14 field-goal attempts, three of five three, had five rebounds, five steals, two assists and a block. Her biggest play may have been driving on Alyson Beebe, drawing Beebe's disqualifying fifth foul with 6:39 left. The superlatives can pile up where Thompson is concerned. She is a strongly built 5-7, who uses short and quick dribble moves to penetrate the lane, can take a hit and has the powers of concentration to still finish shots. She'll also make her free throws. Her shot is light and true to 3-point range and Thompson obviously relishes pressure situations. In the lead-guard role, she always seems to have the ball when she should have it, and is not shy about getting her team in the right spots. Generally, she always seems to be around loose balls. Some players can be characterized by position or style; some, like Thompson, simply are ballers. (Nelson)
