ESPN Player Evaluations

USA U17 Trials-June 10: While her academic performance has put her in a position to skip her senior year and head to South Carolina, it's still a bit difficult to envision Brewer in the SEC five months from now. All the potential and all the tools are there, with the possible exception of her listed height of 6-foot-2 being a bit of wishful thinking. At the same time, it's like the ingredients of a great recipe that need just a little more time in the oven before everything comes together. Physically, the Jacksonville, Fla., native is as strong, active and mobile as virtually any athlete on the floor. On the other hand, her basketball skills still need some refinement before she's in a position to make the most of her potential. Even the position she'll ultimately play at the collegiate level isn't yet defined. Her ballhandling and choices don't yet allow her to be an effective wing and her always effective interior game is beginning to be challenged by the greater size she's facing inside. It doesn't appear to be a question of "if," but more a question of "when." (Lewis)

Nike Regional Skills-May 10: Some players rise to the occasion but another way of looking at it is they play to the level of the competition. Brewer was great last year at USA Basketball, left us wanting more during the spring weekend and was solid this weekend. So while we are left figuring out who the player inside really is she showed she can compete with the best athletes in the front court. She is mobile, agile and she can go heads up with the best in the class.

Boo Williams-April 10: All the same tools are there and her potential is unlimited. That being said this was not one of her better performances. She seems content at times to wait for the game to come to her rather than stepping up and taking over. While she may be evolving into a wing she still has the potential to dominate inside and create a difficult match up for opponents. It's not that she played poorly, she just didn't play as well as she's capable.

USA U16 Trials-May 09: Jacksonville's Kayla Brewer is listed at 6 feet 2, but she was not one of the taller interior players in the bunch. She, like many others, had a slow start while adjusting to the setting, but turned it up late. She has a great frame for the forward position, but with all the length on the floor it forced her to show off her mid-range game, which was pretty nice. She hit some jumpers from the trail and had a few face-up moves from the high post that were impressive, while bringing energy to the paint throughout.

Nike Regional Skills Academy-April 09: Easily one of the more impressive athletes on hand was Florida native Kayla Brewer. Her long, lean build is highlighted by a reach that adds even more to her imposing presence. The 6-foot-2 wing out of Ribault High School in Jacksonville has both the size and skills to be a force on the wing. She can create off the dribble and has the physical strength to finish in traffic. There's good form on her perimeter shot but her shot selection is occasionally questionable. She has the lateral foot speed to guard smaller, quicker backcourt opponents but the size to match up at the forward spot if necessary. If both her physical and basketball skills are maximized she can write her own ticket.
