MDVarsity.com Football Media State Poll

In the 20-year history of the Maryland high school football media state poll, only 15 teams have spent 100 or more weeks in the rankings.

That elite company includes all of the state standards -- DeMatha, Seneca Valley, Gilman, Damascus, Fort Hill, Loyola, and Urbana, among others. But interestingly, only one of the 15 has never won a championship.

That one team is Douglass-P.G., which is back in the rankings this week at No. 25.

Could this be the year for the Eagles?

In a 2A classification that is without many of its recent powerhouse programs (most moving up to a loaded 3A classification), Douglass certainly is a frontrunner. In fact, fellow Prince George's County league rival Gwynn Park and Douglass are ranked No. 1-2 in the MDVarsity.com 2A Classification Top 10.

Since the state poll was formed in 1990, Douglass has been among the most consistent programs in Maryland. The Eagles have qualified for the playoffs 12 of the past 19 seasons with six state semifinal appearances. Douglass is one of the rare programs to have made the state playoffs in three different classifications over the past 19 years. Unfortunately for Douglass, there has always been at least one team better.

Douglass is the only new entry in this week's Top 25 since 24 of last week's Top 25 all posted victories. The lone defeat was Landon's loss to McDonogh in a battle of state-ranked teams. Landon exits this week's poll, which made room for Douglass.

For the record, the rest of the teams that have 100 or more weeks in the state rankings include: Eleanor Roosevelt, Gaithersburg, Gwynn Park, Linganore, Sherwood, Suitland and Westlake.
