Brett Smith | #16 Quarterback, Junior | West Salem (Salem, Ore.)

Brett Smith, a 6-foot-2, 180-pounder at West Salem, is one of the top junior quarterbacks in the nation. He was an ESPN RISE Magazine Preseason All-Oregon Player to Watch and bounced back from an injury this fall to lead West Salem to an 8-1 record heading into the postseason. A standout at last summer's Nike Camp at Stanford and Elite 11 regional camps at Georgia and Cal, Smith will periodically check in with ESPNRISE.com to discuss his season and the recruiting process.

We were fortunate enough to have come away with a win last Friday 42-7 over Roseburg in the 2nd round of the playoffs. Things are starting to get interesting now with us preparing for our quarterfinal game this Friday against West Linn. They aren't ranked but finished second in their league and after watching them on film, they definitely have some players. It will be great to play against Coach Budtke, who coaches at West Linn. He is a great coach that I have gotten to know through the Greg Barton workouts in Portland I have attended since I was in 6th grade. Knowing him as a coach, I know that our opponent will be well coached.

It's been a great week not having school. I have been able to catch up on some sleep in the morning, before I watch film, and then go to practice. I love to watch film on my opponents because it helps me so much on Fridays to be prepared. It is also a great time for my dad and I to spend time together determining who the threats are. He was a quarterback too, and it's great to have him in the same house and always talk football with.

I think we have a great chance this Friday, and the winner gets to play the following week up at PGE Park in Portland. I remember it my freshman year when we went to the semifinals and it was so loud! I know ALL of us want to put together a great effort this Friday so that we can experience that excitement again. Happy Thanksgiving everybody!
