Pontchatrain wins fourth straight

BUENA VISTA | PURSE: $201,250 | 4-YEAR-OLDS AND UP | FILLIES AND MARES | GRADE 2 | 1 MILE (TURF)

Pontchatrain rolled to her fourth consecutive stakes win over the Santa Anita turf with a one-length tally in Monday's Grade 2, $201,250 Buena Vista.

Rating in third under Gary Stevens as Miss Serendipity set fractions of :23 ⅖ seconds, :46 ⅘ seconds and 1:10, Pontchatrain seized the lead from that rival before the furlong pole and drew off to finish the one-mile test in 1:33 ⅕ on firm ground. The 5-2 second choice, Pontchatrain paid $7 to win.

"I was hoping we would get the trip we did," Stevens said. "With a filly like her, you can get a perfect trip. She relaxed for me and we just brought it home. I think if she keeps relaxing for me we can go even farther with her. Even if she doesn't relax, she's a great miler. She's a super filly."

Egg Drop, the 2-1 favorite seeking her fourth straight stakes after narrow wins in the Yellow Ribbon Handicap, Goldikova and Matriarch, rallied to finish second, a head in front of Florida invader Tapicat. Miss Serendipity, Stormy Lucy, Moone's My Name, Dancingtothestars, Unusual Hottie, Customer Base, and Appealing rounded out the order of finish.

Pontchatrain broke her maiden by a head in her debut in August 2012 over Del Mar's Polytrack. She followed up her maiden win with a third-place finish against allowance company over the Cushion Track at Hollywood Park in her sophomore bow last June, and made her turf debut the following month back at Del Mar winning by 3 ¼ lengths in an allowance race.

The daughter of War Front crossed the wire in fourth in her stakes debut in the Sandy Blue Handicap, but then reeled off stakes wins in the Unzip Me, Senator Ken Maddy, and Monrovia, all at about 6 ½ furlongs on Santa Anita's downhill turf course. Her record now stands at 8-6-0-1, $444,882.

Bred in Kentucky by Lavin Bloodstock and Kenowa Stable, Pontchatrain is out of the stakes-placed Housebuster mare Dominica, who is a full sister to stakes scorer Find the Treasure. Her third dam is Grade 1 victress Past Forgetting, who produced Grade 3 victor Codified. Her female family also includes Grade 2 winners Concerto and Sweet Fervor as well as Grade 3 scorer Illusioned.

Pontchatrain sold as a yearling for $200,000 at the Keeneland September sale.
