ARCADIA, Calif. -- Jockey Garrett Gomez, found to have a fractured left heel after a pre-race accident Sunday at Santa Anita, was to visit Dr. James Tibone, an orthopedic specialist, for further evaluation Monday afternoon, Gomez's agent, Tony Matos, said Monday morning.
Tibone is well-known in Southern California for his treatment of the region's elite athletes.
"I want Garrett to see the best," Matos said. "Garrett was in good spirits last night."
Gomez was injured when his mount, Silver Summation, tossed him before flipping over backwards while on a walkway from the paddock to the racetrack, near the track's gift shop, prior to the eighth race.
Gomez landed on his heel and had to be transported to nearby Arcadia Methodist Hospital after being attended to by EMTs for approximately 15 minutes. It is not known how much time he will miss.
Silver Summation landed on his back, but otherwise appeared uninjured. Still, under state racing rules, he was an automatic scratch.
Gomez was off to a sensational start at the meet, winning six stakes since opening day Dec. 26, including the Sham Stakes on Saturday with Out of Bounds.
