Longshot King David upset the $400,000 Jamaica Handicap Oct. 6 at Belmont Park, benefiting from a crawling pace set by the eventual runner-up as 8-5 favorite Dullahan finished fifth.
A $35,000 claim by trainer Michael Maker for Scarlet Stable Sept. 15 at Belmont, the 28-1 shot completed the 1 1/8-mile turf event in 1:52.91 and won by half a length under Rosie Napravnik, with 23-1 shot King Kreesa completing a juicy exacta and Summer Front rounding out the tri.
King David has won five straight races, and stepped up from the claiming ranks to get his first stakes score in his first attempt in such company.
King David returned $58, $18.80, and $6.70 while King Kreesa brought $21.20 and $8 and Summer Front paid $3.30. Cogito, Dullahan, Shkspeare Shaliyah, and Howe Great completed the order of finish.
Bred in Kentucky by Ben Lengacher out of the Gone West mare Storm West, King David now has six wins and a second from 11 starts, with earnings of $333,435. One race prior to being claimed by Maker, he was picked up by trainer Nick Canani for owner Danny Gargan when running for $25,000 at Saratoga Race Course.
