After becoming the first stakes winner for freshman sire Big Brown this summer, Brown Almighty will try to secure his first graded win Oct. 7 in the $150,000 Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland.
Brown Almighty earned a trip to the winner's circle in his first start when he posted a clear victory in a one-mile maiden special weight race on the turf at Arlington Park. Trainer Tim Ice then sent Brown Almighty to Louisiana Downs, where he captured the Sunny's Halo Stakes Aug. 4.
Tri-Star Racing's and Joe Denson's Brown Almighty enters the Bourbon off a narrow loss to Java's War in the Sunday Silence Stakes Sept. 8 at Louisiana Downs. Jockey Franciso Torres, fresh off a riding title at Arlington Park, will have the mount on Brown Almighty.
While the Bourbon drew on Oct. 4, the 1 1/16-mile turf race for 2-year-olds is still taking shape because several juveniles who would be top contenders are cross-entered in the Dixiana Breeders' Futurity Oct. 6 at Keeneland. Those cross-entered horses include With Anticipation Stakes winner Balance the Books and runner-up Joha, as well as Craving Carats.
The Bourbon is a Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In," race for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.
