  • Sam Houston Race Park ended its 80-day Thoroughbred meet on Sunday with increases in attendance and handle. Average daily attendance reached 3,135, compared to 3,131 the previous season, and average daily handle increased 3 percent to $2,185,639. Sam Houston Race Park opens its American Quarter Horse meet on June 27.

  • Tuff Ladys , a 6-year-old mare by the Timeto Thinkrich stallion Timeto Get Tuff, has been named the top Michigan-bred racing Quarter Horse for 2002. Bred by Bernie Fisk and owned by Ronnie Fisk of Sand Lake, Tuff Ladys won four of nine races and earned $18,388 while racing primarily at Mt. Pleasant Meadows.

  • The New Mexico Racing Commission will hold hearings on May 22-23 to consider proposals from three applicants to build a track in Hobbs, located in the southeastern portion of the state. Currently, the three applicants are Ruidoso Downs owner R.D. Hubbard, former Delta Downs co-owner Shawn Scott and former Downs at Santa Fe owner Ken Newton. According to commission chairman Jack Cole, two more applicants could emerge prior to the hearings.
