Storm Flag Flying edges Composure
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, ILL. -- Storm Flag Flying relinquished the lead before fighting back in deep stretch Saturday and winning the million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies.
Storm Flag Flying, sent off as the 4-5 favorite in the field of 10, returned .60, .60 and .20, while winning in 1:49.60. Composure paid .40 and .80 and third-place Santa Catarina .00. Bob Baffert trains Composure and Santa Catarina.
Trainer Shug McGaughey, who had triple bypass surgery in June, called his filly "something special''
"It was a lot of fun to see her run that way,'' said McGaughey, who won his eighth BC race and first since 1995.
Storm Flag Flying, owned by Ogden Mills Phipps, comes from regal bloodlines. Her mother, My Flag, won this race in '95 and her grandmother, Personal Ensign, won the 1988 Distaff.
Storm Flag Flying is now 4-for-4 and likely to win the Eclipse Award as the 2-year-old filly champion.
The race was lengthened to 1 1/8 miles from its usual 1 1-16th miles.
