Raging Fever hot in Adirondack Stakes

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- A minor injury to Gold Mover and an illness sustained by With Ability might leave Raging Fever carrying the hopes of a divisional championship for trainer Mark Hennig and owner Edward Evans.

Raging Fever
Raging Fever, ridden by Jerry D. Bailey, captured the $150,000 Adirondack Stakes.
Monday, Raging Fever showed she will be able to carry the torch just fine. Handling early pace pressure and a sloppy track, Raging Fever romped to a 9 1/4-length victory in the $150,000, Grade 2 Adirondack Stakes for juvenile fillies at soggy Saratoga.

Two Item Limit finished second, 9 1/4 lengths ahead of Secret Lover. Marq of Beauty, Grandma Lu, and Tricky Elaine, who ducked in at the break, completed the order of finish.

It was the third victory in as many starts for Raging Fever, a hot-blooded daughter of Storm Cat who had never been tested in her previous races. Monday, Grandma Lu, under Masi Ebina, battled with Raging Fever through an opening quarter in 22.01 seconds. But Raging Fever, under Jerry Bailey, put her away around the far turn and splashed home an easy winner. Raging Fever covered the 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:17.47, only .31 seconds slower than veteran handicap sprinters one race earlier. She returned $3.90 to win.

It didn't hurt that Tricky Elaine, the second choice, fell hopelessly out of it two jumps out of the gate when she ducked in under Pat Day.

Hennig wasn't worried about Raging Fever's ability to sit off another speed horse. Hennig was also confident Raging Fever would handle an off track. The only thing he wondered was when Raging Fever would begin taking this game seriously.

"She came up here, new atmosphere, new place and she's gotten focused and she seems to really enjoy being a racehorse," he said.

Hennig said he wasn't sure if Raging Fever would return in the Grade 1 Spinaway on Sept. 1. However, Gold Mover is sidelined until October with "active shins" and With Ability scoped with some mucous after her third in Saturday's Sorority, leaving Raging Fever as the likely prospect to return at the end of meet.
