Xtra Heat out of Garland of Roses

JAMAICA, N.Y. -- Xtra Heat's run toward a possible Eclipse Award as the nation's top sprinter is on hold. The sensational 3-year-old filly has developed a cough and will not run in Saturday's Garland of Roses Handicap at Aqueduct, reports her trainer, John Salzman.

"She coughed a bunch of times and left a handful of feed this morning," Salzman said from his base at Laurel Park. "It looks like she may have gotten a little sick with the weather changing back and forth. I don't want to take a chance with her; there are too many other races out there. She's been too good to us."

Salzman said Xtra Heat could make her next start in the January 1 Interborough Handicap at Aqueduct, a six-furlong race worth $75,000.

The Garland of Roses was to mark Xtra Heat's return to racing against fellow fillies and mares. Against males, she was second in the Breeders' Cup Sprint before finishing third, again against males, in the DeFrancis Memorial Dash at Laurel. The filly is 9-for-13 on the year and remains in contention for the sprint championship. In her absence a field of seven will meet in the Garland of Roses and the likely favorite is Dat You Miz Blue.
