Keeneland sale finishes

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- A filly by Kissin Kris brought the top price of $55,000 Saturday, the final day of Keeneland's September Yearling Sale.

Fred Edick bought the bay filly out of Heart's Goldengirl, by Gold Alert. Oak Lawn Farm sold the filly.

Keeneland sold 173 horses for $1,349,100 on Saturday. The average price was $7,798, with a median of $5,000.

During the 12-day event, Keeneland sold 2,969 horses for $274,125,300. The gross sales total was second only to the $291,827,100 for 3,313 horses in 2000. Gross sales increased 30 percent from $210,809,000 last year.

The average price of $92,329 set a record, up from $71,850 last year, and more than the previous record, $88,085 set in 2000. The median price was $34,000, a 13.3 percent jump from last year's $30,000 record.

Auctioneers sold 27 horses for $1 million or more, compared to only 15 last year.

A filly by Gone West brought the top price of the sale. John Ferguson purchased the yearling out of Touch of Greatness for $3.8 million on behalf of Sheihk Mohammed al Maktoum. Three Chimneys Sales sold the filly.
