Cubs pitcher Jon Lester clarified any confusion as to why he didn't attend the White House ceremony to celebrate the Cubs championship on Monday tweeting he had a death in the family and the funeral was on Monday. Several players missed the ceremony including Jake Arrieta who also was dealing with family issues. The Cubs also have stated no player missed the ceremony for political reasons. Lester attended after the Red Sox won the WS in 2013.

Former Strikeforce middleweight title challenger and UFC veteran Tim Kennedy has announced his retirement at age 37. Kennedy last fought Kevin Gastelum at UFC 206 on Dec. 10, and lost via third-round TKO. He finishes with an overall record of 18-6. Kennedy began fighting in 2001. He was recently part of the launch of the Mixed Martial Arts Athletes Association, which advocates for better work environments for UFC athletes.

Source: Western Michigan is hiring former Indiana offensive coordinator Kevin Johns as its offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Johns spent the past six seasons in a coordinator role at Indiana and also worked with the Hoosiers' wide receivers and quarterbacks. FootballScoop.com first reported Johns' hiring at Western Michigan. Really good move for new Broncos coach Tim Lester.

Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones wasn't ready to get into what will happen with Tony Romo when speaking on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. "We've got a lot to think about here, but that's in the future," Jones said, adding that he believes Romo will play in a Super Bowl if he can remain healthy.
