Cubs starter Jake Arrieta doesn't just excel at pitching. He's a pretty good hitter too. His triple on Tuesday night was the third of his career. That's the most among active pitchers. Arrieta also has four home runs since the start of last season. Only Madison Bumgarner of the Giants has more (8).

The Orioles' playoff chances just took a hit. Following the team's 8-1 win over the Nationals, manager Buck Showalter said that ace Chris Tillman will be going on the disabled list with shoulder inflammation. The O's, who are clinging to the second AL wild card slot, have played ,770 ball when Tillman starts (20-6), and .495 ball when anyone else starts (49-50).

The Royals have won 9 straight games, the 3rd-longest winning streak by a team this season. It was their 2nd shutout in the last 3 games. They have allowed 9 runs in their last 8 games. Every other team has allowed at least 20 runs in that same stretch. The Royals have 3 shutouts in August after having 3 from April to July.

Eddie Matz ESPN Senior Writer

The Orioles routed the Nats 8-1 for their second win in as many nights in the alleged Battle of the Beltway rivalry. But on a gorgeous summer night with little to no humidity in Baltimore, only 26,697 fans came out to watch two contenders at Camden Yards. So maybe it's not a rivalry after all.

Doug Padilla ESPN Staff Writer

Scott Kazmir became the 27th Dodgers player to go on the disabled list this season, tying a major league record. The Boston Red Sox put 27 different players on the DL in 2012. Kazmir has neck inflammation.

The latest Ray Searage pitching project for the Pirates is Ivan Nova and he just tossed a six-hit, 98-pitch complete game to beat the Astros. The Pirates need to roll off a 10 wins in 12 games kind of stretch here and getting better results from the rotation is the key.

Like most Cardinal starting pitchers, Jaime Garcia has yet to get into a good rhythm this season. He looked like he had turned a corner with two dominant starts to begin the month, but had his second clunker in a row Tuesday night against the Mets, lasting just four innings and allowing six runs on seven hits, including two home runs. Garcia's 4.37 ERA is the worst of his eight-year career.

Don't expect a QB announcement from Mark Helfrich before the Ducks' final fall scrimmage on Thursday. He said following the scrimmage he'll sit down with all the coaches as they develop their depth chart for the UC-Davis game week. All signs point to grad transfer Dakota Prukop being named the starter, but will be interesting to see where Justin Herbert falls in the pecking order. Several have been very impressed with the 6-foot-6 true freshman.
