Bama CB Marlon Humphrey said there will be changes in the secondary given the loss of safety Eddie Jackson for the season. Minkah Fitzpatrick and Tony Brown cross-trained at safety during the spring, Humphrey said.

The Giants' release of PK Josh Brown accomplishes nothing but the deserved rejection of a domestic abuser. The most significant takeaway from this episode is that the NFL is a long way from effectively addressing the issue within its policies and purview. The primary question is unanswered: Can the NFL find a way to demonstrate -- not say it, but show it -- that domestic violence is intolerable?

Kevin Durant on narrative that this era isn't competitive enough: "I disagree. In between the lines, we're just as competitive. I don't know about that other stuff they're talking about. I don't know what they're trying to say, but if you step on the court with anyone of us, we're going to go at you and that's how it is."

In the official announcement of Josh Brown's release, Giants owner John Mara said, "We believed we did the right thing at every juncture in our relationship with Josh. Our beliefs, our judgments were misguided. We accept that responsibility."

Urban Meyer isn't planning to address the possibility of running the table to get back to the College Football Playoff, but he probably doesn't even need to since Ohio State already has experience doing just that in 2014. "I'm actually trying not to go there," Meyer said. "I hear that, and a lot of players like to say things and talk afterwards, and that's fine. I don't usually bring that up, but I also don't stand in the way of leaders to get people's attention. I think that's out there, but I'm trying to avoid that."

Is Cam Newton really off to a worse start than last season? The stats from his first five starts look pretty similar. But he's no longer getting elite-level support from his defense, so his record (and thus the narrative) has shifted.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon indicated on his radio show on the Cubs flagship station that Kyle Schwarber would be the DH in Game 1 of the World Series on Tuesday night. Schwarber hasn't played since the third game of the season after tearing two ligaments in his left knee in a collision in the outfield. It's a risky move but the Cubs think he's ready.

Bob Tewksbury provided one of my favorite behind-scenes anecdotes this season. He was in clubhouse during a May game in Chicago, chatting with David Ortiz when Big Papi "looks up (at TV) and goes, ‘Oh man, I've got to go hit.' He went out and hit a three-run homer off somebody, and he comes back in and goes, ‘So, where were we?'" Proof that Ortiz could do pretty much whatever he wanted at plate.

When 7-year-old Maddox McCollum dressed as Clemson linebacker Ben Boulware for Halloween, the picture went viral. Boulware saw it and wanted to meet McCollum for himself. So Boulware showed up early last Saturday before McCollum's 8-and-under football team played their game and spent time visiting with all the players, taking pictures and signing autographs. He even gave the team a pep talk. "It made Maddox's day," said dad, Marlin McCollum.
