Now that the fight between junior middleweight titlist Jermall Charlo and No. 1 contender Julian Williams is here, the question is, can they make it count? Both are ready, or so they say.

Dave Dombrowski on whether Chris Sale's jersey-cutting incident in July ever gave Red Sox pause: "I think you do your checking when you read that and see what causes some things. But after I've checked things out, not really, no." Dombrowski said he's "heard a lot of pleasant things" about Sale off the field.

Carlson, a junior, said there isn't set on a specific round he'd like to hit when his NFL feedback comes in. However staying in school is his top option right now. Sandy Alderson all but acknowledged the Mets' payroll would go DOWN from where it is now, which he estimated at about $150 million. That's because the outfielder the Mets subtract, making $13 million to $15 million, probably won't be fully reinvested in the bullpen. Alderson said the primary motivation, though, is not decreasing the payroll. It's more about having an outfield that has pieces that fit better playing-time-wise. The Mets, right now, are heavy in corner outfielders at the expense of center fielders.

The stark contrast between Adam Eaton's defensive metrics in center and right field has always amazed me. In 1653 2/3 innings in center field the past two years, he had minus-16 Defensive Runs Saved. In 980 1/3 innings in right field, he had PLUS-22 DRS. It's therefore tough for me to sing his praises with a move back to center.

Oklahoma receiver Dede Westbrook said he had no idea he was going to be a Heisman finalist until his name was announced Monday night. He said his jaw dropped. "This wasn't part of the plan," Westbrook said. Teammate Baker Mayfield was much more certain. "I knew Dede would be there."

Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson said he was pumped to be a Heisman finalist, and said his teammates have told him to "bring it home." As for being the first player in Louisville history to be a Heisman finalist, he said, "That's amazing."

Dave Dombrowski says Red Sox took calls today on all starting pitchers beyond the three aces, but no urgency to make a trade. Dombrowski says he's OK with four lefties in rotation. "They're four good lefties."
