After years of uncertainty whether racing would continue at Irwindale Speedway, operators said Wednesday the racetrack will close in January 2018.
In an emailed statement, Jim Cohan, CEO of Team 211 Entertainment, which runs the Irwindale Event Center housing the speedway, expressed surprise at receiving word this week from the property's owners notifying him they would shut down the facility.
"In all honesty, we were here and in it for the long haul. In fact, we were in the process of putting out our complete schedule for the 2018 season," Cohan said in the statement. "All that made this news very difficult for me to hear, and very hard on our whole team."
The property was sold in 2013 to developer Lindom Properties, two years after Iwrindale Speedway LLC declared bankruptcy.
There was no racing in Irwindale between 1979 and 1998.
Irwindale Speedway opened in 1999, and operated until 2011 when it shut down due to the bankruptcy. The track reopened in 2013 before the property was sold.
