Wave Around: how the wave around rule works: All vehicles between the leader and the caution vehicle at the start/finish line when the "one to go" signal is given by the starter are considered "Wave Around" eligible. "Wave Around" vehicles will not be permitted to enter pit road at any time during this yellow flag/caution period. "Wave Around" vehicles must receive the green flag on the race track before being permitted to enter pit road without a penalty. Vehicles under a penalty and the "Free Pass" vehicle will not be eligible to receive a "Wave Around".

Pit Stall Selections: The selections of pit stalls for the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway have been made.
With the field downsized to 40 cars, three pit stalls (1,2,12) have been eliminated, are not in play and don't count towards driving through more than three pit boxes.
Also, since only 39 cars and 40 stalls, stall 40 is not being used.
Pole sitter #4-Harvick chose pit stall 3, the first stall available [as do most pole sitters].
Outside pole sitter #31-Newman took pit stall 13, the next with an opening in front of it.
#18-Busch, who starts 3rd, took the 23rd stall, just before start-finish line.
The final pit stall was taken by #2-Keselowski, who starts 5th.
To see where the drivers/teams pit stall is, see the pit selection chart on the Pit Stall Selection page(pdf).(3-5-2017)

NASCAR Overtime (not called Green-White-Checkered anymore) Race Procedure: NASCAR allows a maximum of three restart attempts prior to the White Flag under NASCAR's Green-White-Checkered flag finish. If the leader has taken the White Flag and the caution flag is displayed, the field is frozen and the race will not be restarted. Previously, there was only one restart attempt. The procedure applies to all three national series. See rule and notes on the NASCAR Overtime rules/news/stats page.

With stellar final lap, Kevin Harvick wins Atlanta pole: Kevin Harvick saved his best lap for the best possible moment on Friday afternoon, putting his #4 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford on the pole for Sunday's Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. In the third and final round of knockout qualifying for the second Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race of the season, Harvick toured the 1.54-mile track in 29.118 seconds (190.398 mph) to post the fastest lap of the entire qualifying session. In winning his second pole at Atlanta and the 18th of his career, Harvick edged Ryan Newman (189.870 mph) by .081 seconds.
"In the last run there, I was able to carry more speed and do some things with the car that I wasn't able to do in the first two runs," Harvick said. "At that point I just didn't want to screw it up, because I felt like I'd gotten to the green, which I didn't do in the second round. I got to the green good, I got through (Turns) 1 and 2 good. I just needed to hit the bottom and get that left front on the line so that it would hook and get up off the corner. That was by far the best of the three laps, and we saved it perfectly for the end."
Newman, who hasn't won a pole since the fall race at New Hampshire in 2013, failed to add to his career total of 51 and failed to break his tie with the late Buddy Baker for most poles at Atlanta (seven). Newman's #31 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet was second fastest behind Kyle Busch's #18 Toyota in the opening round of the time trial and fastest in the second round. "We were so close," Newman said. "I really wanted to beat my old buddy Buddy Baker's record there. Been tied with him for a while, so that was kind of rough. But I'm just proud of the guys and proud of the effort. It is the litmus test for us for a lot of the rest of the season. It was a good start for sure."
Busch qualified third at 189.850 mph, followed by Ricky Stenhouse Jr., and Team Penske teammates Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano in fifth and sixth, respectively.
Four cars failed to make qualifying attempts because of inspection issues, and another -- the #33 of Jeffrey Earnhardt -- had engine issues. Accordingly, Earnhardt, Michael McDowell, Cole Whitt, Derrike Cope and Cody Ware will start from the final five positions in the 39-car field.(NASCAR Wire Service)(3-3-2017)

    How to Calculate Track Speeds: use the formula Speed = Distance divided by Time. Distance is Track Length, and Lap Time into Hours. Once hour is 3600 seconds, so the calculation for a 48 second lap at Daytona(2.5 miles) would be: Speed = 2.5 x (3600/48), = 2.5 x 75 = 187.500mph. For a 19 second lap at Bristol(.533 miles): Speed = .533 x (3600/19), = .533 x 189.474 = a speed of 100.990mph

    TIRE NOTES & FACTS

    Tire: Goodyear Eagle Speedway Radials

    Set limits:
    5 sets for practice, 1 set for qualifying/start of race and 12 sets for the race;

    Tire Codes: Left-side -- D-4680; Right-side -- D-4682

    Tire Circumference: Left-side -- 87.48 in. (2,222 mm); Right-side -- 88.39 in. (2,245 mm)

    Minimum Recommended Inflation:
    Left Front -- 19 psi; Left Rear -- 19 psi;
    Right Front -- 50 psi; Right Rear -- 47 psi

    Storyline - Worn Surface and New Rules Make Tire Management Critical at Atlanta: Goodyear will bring a unique tire combination to Atlanta, with its long, sweeping turns and worn surface. Atlanta was the first NASCAR track at which Goodyear's multi-zone tread technology was used back in 2013, with two distinct tread compounds on the same right-side tire - one being traction-focused on the outboard 10 inches of the tire to grip the worn out asphalt (Traction Zone) and one being firmer on the inboard two inches to deal with the heat and loading generated by the track's long, high-banked turns (Endurance Zone). While tire management always comes into play at Atlanta, it may even be more so this year - considering the abrasive track surface and teams short-pitting to take advantage of fresh tires, NASCAR's new tire set allocation rules and teams adjusting strategies to race for stage wins/points.

    Notes: While teams in all three NASCAR Series will run the same right-side tire code (D-4682) at Atlanta this week, those in the Cup and Xfinity Series will run a different left-side code than those in the Camping World Truck Series . . . this is the same combination of left- and right-side tires that Cup teams ran at Atlanta last year . . . in the Xfinity Series, this is the first time teams have run either of these two tire codes . . . the differences for Xfinity teams, compared to what was run at Atlanta last season, are a compound change on the outboard 10 inches of the right-side (more grip), and both compound (more grip) and construction (to bring in line with what is run at other speedways) changes to the left-side . . . Atlanta is the only track at which these teams are scheduled to run either of these two tire codes in 2017 . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run liners in all four tire positions at Atlanta . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.
