Original post 4/14/2017 Martins Motorsports will return to the NASCAR Xfinity Series at Bristol Motor Speedway in the Fitzgerald Glider Kits 300 on April 22nd with driver Tommy Joe Martins & sponsorship from long time partner Diamond Gusset Jeans.
Bristol will be the first of a 9-race Xfinity schedule for the newly minted #45 team. The team plans to compete at the Spring & Fall events at Bristol, Dover, & Richmond, as well as Chicagoland, Kansas, & Indianapolis. Kevin Eagle will return as the Crew Chief, and the team will continue to run Chevrolets.
The move marks a dramatic shift for Martins Motorsports. The team will no longer compete in the NASCAR Camping World Truck series, with the exception of the Aspen Dental 150 at Eldora Speedway where JR Heffner will return as the driver.
"The timing was right," team owner Craig Martins said. "We had a tremendous opportunity to make this move, and we took it. A return to Xfinity was a long-term goal for us - it just worked out a lot quicker than we expected."
The race at Bristol will be the first Xfinity series race for Tommy Joe & the team since a DNQ at Daytona International Speedway in 2014. Martins sees the move to Xfinity as a new chapter for himself and the company.
"I've said a lot about our struggles in 2014. It left a really bad taste in our mouths," Tommy Joe said. "But I'm looking forward to this. I've wanted another chance for a long time. I loved the truck series, but I'm excited to be an Xfinity Series driver again. Having Diamond Gusset back on the car just makes it even more special."

UPDATE: Martins Motorsports has withdrawn the #45 Diamond Gusset Jeans Chevrolet of Tommy Joe Martins from the Fitzgerald Glider Kits 300 at Bristol Motor Speedway due to predictions of inclement weather.
With no race attempts or points to fall back on in case of a qualifying rain out, and a 90% chance of rain in the weekend forecast, car owner Craig Martins made the decision Wednesday afternoon to postpone the team's 2017 Xfinity Series debut until the next week at Richmond International Raceway.
"We think it was the right call," Craig said. "We didn't have any reason to risk it. We haven't been out there every week - no one was forcing us to go. That's what's nice about having our limited schedule. It allows us to be flexible and make a decision like this."
Driver Tommy Joe Martins had been looking forward to the Bristol return, even reposting a blog from last season about the importance of the race to him and his family.
"It's disappointing, for sure," Martins said. "I was excited about it. But I think we're making the right decision. Whether it rains or it doesn't, it's going to give Kevin (Eagle - Crew Chief) more time to prepare for Richmond. And with the weather reports, it sounds like it's going to be a long weekend for those guys."
Longtime Martins Motorsports partner Diamond Gusset Jeans was scheduled as the primary sponsor for Bristol - an event in the company's home state of Tennessee - but the withdrawal was discussed with Diamond Gusset founder David Hall.
"He understood," Craig said. "He knows we're a small team. He's been a great partner to us for a long time. We're all looking forward to getting on track at Richmond. David is going to be there with us. They're just as excited as we are."
