Superman (Johnson) wins at Auto Club: #48-Jimmie Johnson, running a Superman paint scheme, won the Auto Club 400 Sprint Cup Series race at Auto Club Speedway for his 2nd win of the season, 6th win at Auto Club Speedway (the most of any driver) and 77th career win, which allows him to pass Dale Earnhardt (76 wins) for 7th all time. #4-Kevin Harvick led the most laps 142 of 205 laps. The race ended in NASCAR Overtime when #18-Busch had a tire go down with two laps left in the race. Harvick led the race when the caution came out. All the leaders made pit stops for new tires, Harvick came out 2nd and #11-Hamlin came out with the lead. Johnson came out 3rd but took the lead on the first overtime lap and kept the lead to win the race.
#4-Harvick finished 2nd, followed by #11-Hamlin, #22-Logano, #17-Stenhouse Jr., #24-Elliott (best career finish), #19-Edwards, #47-Allmendinger, #2-Keselowski and #1-McMurray.
#88-Batman (Earnhardt Jr.), was never a factor but was able to finish 11th. The pole winner, #3-Austin Dillon ended up with a 24th.
There were two hard wrecks. The first was on lap 46 when #42-Larson had a rear tire go down, causing his car to slap the outside wall, which then shot the car across the track, with no brakes, hard into the SAFER wall on the inside wall. Larson was OK.
On lap 120, #10-Patrick was running 19th when she passed #5-Kahne. Kahne came down after the pass, but misjudged and clipped the #10 rear end, causing it to spin and slam the outside wall. Patrick was OK, but not happy.

Wounded veterans enjoy day at Auto Club Speedway: Bringing veterans together for an adventure brought Temecula-based Wishes For Warriors to Auto Club Speedway on Saturday for the NASCAR Xfinity Series TreatMyClot.com 300. The group, founded two years ago by former Marine Corps Staff Sergeant Bryan Marshall, is a nonprofit organization specializing in outdoor experiences for wounded veterans. "We get these men and women back out there," Marshall said. "Ninety nine percent of what we do is outdoors, and there's no gimmicks." Marshall, 32, was joined by nine veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan on Saturday for a meet-and-greet with several series drivers before escaping to an on-track suite to watch the race. "We try to do as many epic, awesome things for these guys as we can. To let them know that we care, and to re-fire that spark in them," said Marshall, a resident of Temecula. It was the first NASCAR experience offered by Wishes For Warriors, which has previously provided hunting and fishing trips, white-water rafting and even skydiving excursions for veterans.(Press Enterprise)(3-20-2016)
Bees force NASCAR to abandon flag stand UPDATE: There was a lot of buzz Friday at Auto Club Speedway. Literally. A swarm of bees invaded NASCAR's flag stand Friday afternoon at the 2-mile oval, meaning Xfinity Series practice got underway with no green flag and no flag man. FOX Sports cameras zoomed in on a collection of bees - dozens, at least - clinging to a ledge in the flag stand. Obviously, NASCAR decided it was better to not have a flag man for practice than to expose any officials to needless stings (drivers can still hear about the track conditions from their team radio communications). After practice, a beekeeper arrived and sprayed some sort of liquid at the swarm -- many of which fell in a bucket. But NASCAR spokesman Tom Bryant said there were remnants of "less than happy bees in the flag stand area" before Sprint Cup Series qualifying, which meant the flag man had to stand on an elevated platform near the start/finish line in order to wave the green. "We anticipate no problems with this situation tomorrow or at any other point in the weekend," Bryant said.(USA Today)(3-19-2016)
UPDATE: When NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice started on Saturday morning at Auto Club Speedway, there was a flag man on his usual perch atop the flag stand at the start/finish line. That was noteworthy only because an infestation of bees had driven the flag man from his usual station on Friday, forcing Sprint Cup qualifying to be flagged on a temporary platform behind the grandstand fence. Bees are an important part of the ecology, and in California, invading swarms must be relocated rather than killed. Accordingly, the speedway called in a beekeeper who immobilized the unwelcome visitors with a spray and collected and removed the swarm. So when Sprint Cup practice began at 8:00am/pt on Saturday morning, the flag man was back in his usual spot - with no bees in sight.(NASCAR Wire Service)(3-20-2016)
Auto Club Speedway a rough, difficult track: The rougher a track is, the more drivers seem to like it. That's certainly the conventional wisdom at Auto Club Speedway, which features pronounced bumps on the backstretch, abrasive asphalt and distinct seams between the racing lanes. "You could write a book about a lap at this place," said Carl Edwards, runner-up to Kevin Harvick by .010 seconds last Sunday at Phoenix. "There's so much happening out there-where you place your tires, how you enter the corner, what the guy in front of you is doing. All of those things add up to a lot different balance. Turns 1 and 2, as many times as I've been here, I still don't feel like I have it figured out. There's spots that I like to run, there's things I like to do, but there's some spots out there and it's like, man, I can't quite figure out what's happening. When you hit this point in the race track and the car moves and I can't repeat it all of the time, so you never really know what you're going to get. I think that's good. It's a little bit unpredictable, it's definitely tough and, to me, that's part of the fun."
Edwards, however, didn't have as much fun as he would have liked during Friday's opening NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice. He was 25th on the speed chart, and he pointed to a dilemma that can haunt drivers and crew chiefs at the two-mile track: Whether to change the car or change your racing line? "Your car can drive terribly, and then you can move around a little bit and it drives pretty well," Edwards said. "So then you've got to decide, 'Well, is that where I want to race, or do I want to race over here where it's terrible? Should we work on it?' It's tough. It's hard to decide exactly what you want. The fun is that you can actually change it. You can do things. If the car isn't working well in one spot, you move somewhere else and try something else. You're not locked into a tiny little box where everybody has to run in the exact same spot."(NASCAR Wire Service)(3-19-2016)

Atlanta removing 17,000 seats, Charlotte 41,000 UPDATE: Atlanta Motor Speedway's parent company, Speedway Motorsports, Inc., announced Tuesday that they will remove 17,000 seats from the track's grandstands. The company anticipates using those areas for premium hospitality, advertising and other facility purposes. Their sister track, Charlotte Motor Speedway, is losing 41,000 seats.(wgxa.tv), see image of the CMS construction at Slugger Labbe's Twitter.(12-10-2014)
UPDATE: Alterations announced this week are in line with a trend of tracks removing seats. Charlotte, after removing 41,000 seats this winter, will be down to permanent seating of 89,000 in 2015, a startlingly low capacity considering its location in NASCAR's epicenter. But it's par for the course. Atlanta is removing 17,000 seats to get down to 75,000; Dover is removing 17,500 seats to get down to 95,500; and Daytona is removing its backstretch grandstands of 46,500 next spring to go to 101,500 seats. Other tracks on the circuit have made similar changes.
At its peak in 2007, International Speedway Corp.'s 12 major tracks had 1.1 million grandstand seats (not including suites). After the Daytona renovation, ISC will be down 30 percent to approximately 761,000 seats.
In 2013 alone, the following ISC tracks cut seats: Talladega (from 108,000 to 78,000), Richmond (91,000 to 71,000), Chicagoland (69,000 to 55,500), Michigan (84,000 to 71,000), California (81,000 to 68,000), Darlington (60,000 to 58,000) and Homestead (56,000 to 46,000). Any additional cuts likely will be revealed when its annual report comes out in January.
With the current Charlotte and Atlanta reductions, Speedway Motorsports has cut 101,000 seats (12 percent) across seven of its tracks since 2009, although it added 38,000 at Kentucky when it moved a Cup race to that track. SMI, which includes suites in its capacity estimates, cut capacity in 2013 at Atlanta (from 98,000 to 92,000), Bristol (158,000 to 153,000) and New Hampshire (96,000 to 95,000).
Dover listed 135,000 seats in 2009, so its reduction in recent years is 29 percent. At one point, it reduced 20,000 seats by replacing the current seats with wider ones for more fan comfort, a move done by many racetracks. Indianapolis and Pocono, privately owned, do not have to report their capacities, but Indianapolis also has removed seats.(see full article at th
