Tyler Matthews recently signed with MDM Motorsports in Mooresville to race in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series for the 2018 season.
"It's really exciting and a great opportunity to take my career to the next step and then see where it can go," Matthews said Monday. "To run in one the top three series of NASCAR is pretty awesome."
The 21-year-old Matthews said the contract was finalized Friday.
His first race in his No. 99 Chevrolet Silverado will be March 24 at the Alpha Energy Solutions 250 at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway.
He was the 2015 state NASCAR Whelen All-American Late Model Series Rookie of the Year and the series' 2016 state champion with his home track of East Carolina Motor Speedway in Robersonville.
Matthews also won the 2016 late model season title at Southern National Motorsports Park in Lucama and was the 2017 late model champion at Carteret County Speedway.
Matthews is a junior at East Carolina University, where he majors in construction management. He said he will remain enrolled at ECU and then "see what happens for next year if I can make this full time."
His ultimate goal is to compete full time in the truck series and then move up to the NASCAR Xfinity Series and Monster Energy Cup Series.
