The emphasis today, for the third straight day: ball protection. Defenders are continually trying to poke the ball out even after the whistle. Rams fumbled six times unofficially Saturday.

Jered Weaver announced his retirement today after 12 seasons and 150 wins in the big leagues. He twice finished in the top three in the Cy Young voting, but he was also one of the more entertaining pitchers to watch with his unusual slingshot delivery and ability to keep batters guessing. Even as he lost his fastball he remained effective for a few seasons, going slow, slower and slowest and displaying the art of pitching.

OVERHEARD: "Tre' just likes to talk in general, which is OK," said Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn, when asked if the secondary was communicating more on Wednesday. Of course, Lynn was referring to new safety Tre' Boston, who's always talking and has become one of the vocal leaders of the defensive backfield.

ROOKIE REPORT: After playing well against the Seattle Seahawks last week, rookie defensive back Desmond King had another strong performance during practice, looking comfortable as a nickel defender with Casey Hayward resting a hamstring strain. Third rounder Dan Feeney got a handful of reps at right guard and remains part of the competition with Kenny Wiggins for the starting job.

Chargers defensive coordinator Gus Bradley did not like the energy his defense played with during his team's 48-17 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in team's preseason opener last week. However, Bradley said Wednesday's practice in full pads was much better. "I showed multiple times plays being made and not a lot of enthusiasm," Bradley said. "But again, I think it's being out there for the first time and maybe playing with some guys you haven't played with, and getting a feel for that."

It is odd that everyone seems to be hitting more home runs but Angels outfielder Kole Calhoun, who homered today, is headed the other direction. Calhoun hit 26 blasts two seasons ago but isn't likely to approach that figure in 2017. One must assume there has been some underlying injury so don't ignore him as a potential top-50 outfielder next season. He could certainly bounce back.
