The Rams are on the board, on a 44-yard field goal from Greg Zuerlein. Eight plays, 29 yards. Big completion came from a scrambling Jared Goff, who threw a 17-yard pass to a leaping Brian Quick. Initial incompletion call was overturned. It's a two-score game with plenty of time, but defense needs stops.

Pac-12 in final College Football Playoff rankings: 4. Washington; 9. USC; 10. Colorado; 18. Stanford; 19. Utah. So Washington won title in conference with three top-10 teams and five in top-20. With USC in Rose Bowl, that means conference will divide a $10 million payout between its 12 teams. Fair to say the conference was top-heavy more than deep this year. Six teams with eight or more wins — Washington State at 8-4 -- but those were the only bowl eligible teams.

As expected, USC jumped Colorado in the committee's rankings and will play Penn State in the Rose Bowl. The Buffaloes will be disappointed, but a 31-point loss to Washington in the Pac-12 title game combined with a head-to-head loss to USC justified the decision.

A lot to love in the Rose Bowl Game presented by Northwestern Mutual, but let's start with this: No two coaches engineered better in-season turnarounds than USC's Clay Helton and Penn State's James Franklin.

The Rose Bowl is always worth watching, but the Penn State-USC is a particularly compelling non-playoff matchup. These are two of the hottest teams in the country, led by star quarterbacks (Trace McSorley and Sam Darnold). Rematch of 2009 game, which was Penn State's last time in Pasadena.

There are 17 straight wins between USC and Penn State entering this Rose Bowl, match-up of two of the country's hottest teams.

Another drop by Kenny Britt. Jared Goff, who has shown some nice mobility to escape pressure, cannot catch a break, because his receivers cannot catch a pass.

13-play, 48-yard, 5-plus-minute drive by the Patriots with seconds left in the first half, ending with a 28-yard field goal by Stephen Gostkowski. Patriots lead, 17-0, at halftime. They've had the ball for nearly 22 minutes, picked up 12 first downs, gained 230 yards from scrimmage. Rams: one first down, 25 yards. Time of possession: 8:09.

Patriots feel like they can do whatever they want against the Rams. Convert yet another 4th-and-1 with Blount, this one from the Rams' 34. "At least it wasn't a touchdown," Rams radio broadcast says.

Rams CB EJ Gaines has a quad injury. His return is questionable. Gaines absence usually prompts Lamarcus Joyner to play outside. He's much better in the slot.

Jared Goff seriously needs some help. Kenny Britt catches a first-down pass, but allows it to get stripped away for an incompletion. Having a franchise quarterback doesn't matter if you don't have the receivers or the offensive line.

Chris Hogan TD on the fade route...Tight split to create more room with an outside release. And a great throw from Tom Brady. Put the ball on the back shoulder. It's now a 14-0 Patriots lead over the Rams.

Patriots capitalize, as you knew they would. Beautiful 14-yard, back-shoulder throw from Tom Brady to Chris Hogan, who got just enough separation from EJ Gaines. Rams already trail by a couple of touchdowns and have yet to advance the ball into enemy territory. This one may be getting out of hand sooner than the one from New Orleans.

Two big matchups on Sunday

If people are burnt out from football during the day, here are a couple of NBA matchups to watch. Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook battle in OKC and the Clippers try to avenge last week's loss to the Pacers.

Lance Kendricks drops a pass coming across the field, for what could've been a first down, and it bounces into the hands of Malcolm Butler for an interception, giving the Patriots the ball at the Rams' 30. Rams killed themselves in that first quarter.

Tipped ball, but it falls into Patriots' hands. Need to convert on those turnover opportunities today.

A muffed punt by the Patriots, but Rams can't come up with it. Hard to see them winning without some turnovers that give them good field position. Back-to-back three-and-outs by the Rams' offense.

Is Jeff Fisher's extension deserved?

Since Fisher was hired in 2012, the Rams are one of 11 teams that hasn't made a playoff appearance. Each of the other 10 teams has made a coaching change in that span. (ESPN Stats & Info)
