What did the Rams do when the No. 23 overall pick was announced? They played a highlight reel of new WR Brandin Cooks. "It looked good," GM Les Snead said.

Les Snead, full of jokes today: "You know there was a rumor going around that Baker had this flight to Indy. Had a great tutoring session with someone that he sat beside on the plane." Sean McVay, blushing: "I heard it was pretty spectacular."

Some Thursday moves that will impact the Rams' regular-season schedule: Martavjs Bryant joining Amari Cooper and Jordy Nelson in Oakland (Week 1); Josh Rosen on the Cardinals (Weeks 2 and 16); Derwin James joining Casey Hayward on the Chargers (Week 3); Bradley Chubb joining Von Miller in Denver (Week 6) and Marcus Davenport joining Cam Jordan in New Orleans (Week 9).

Los Angeles Chargers safety Derwin James said he's already talked with new teammate Casey Hayward (they share the same agent). James also worked out with Seattle Seahawks safety Earl Thomas in the lead-up to the draft, and could play a similar role for the Chargers. "Just playing more with your eyes, and eyes before feet," James said, when asked what he learned from Thomas. "It was great. He showed me a lot more stuff off the field and what to expect coming into the league as a rookie, so it was good working with guys like him."

Rams GM Les Snead, probably watching casually, said he'd be interested in seeing who was selected at No. 23 and thinking about who he could have picked there (before trading for WR Brandin Cooks). ED Harold Landry and WR Calvin Ridley were available. The Patriots picked OL Isaiah Wynn.

S Derwin James is a great fit for the Chargers defensive scheme. Think of the impact with James rolled down in coverage or as an extra defender in the box. Top-tier athletic ability at the position and the speed to close on the ball.

The Chargers might have wanted a run-stopping defensive tackle, but Derwin James gives them their long-term replacement for Eric Weddle after Tre Boston filled in last year. It's excellent value for a guy who was 7th on both Mel Kiper and Todd McShay's final mock drafts.

Chargers now on the clock and Florida State safety Derwin James seems like a perfect fit for a Kam Chancellor-type role in Gus Bradley's Cover 3 scheme.

Two picks left before Chargers select at No. 17 and Louisville QB Lamar Jackson still available.

Sitting at No. 17, the Chargers are at a good spot with Derwin James, Vita Vea,Tremaine Edmunds and Rashaan Evans still available and the Bucs on the clock at No. 12.

The Rams host the Cardinals in their home opener in Week 2. The opposing quarterback will either be former Rams No. 1 overall pick Sam Bradford, or former UCLA star Josh Rosen.

Seth Walder ESPN Analytics

Despite the Big 12's reputation, Baker Mayfield faced stiffer competition than either Sam Darnold or Josh Rosen last year. The adjusted defensive QBR of Mayfield's opponents, weighted by his number of action plays against them, was 44.8 last season. By the same method, Darnold's and Rosen's opponents' defensive QBR were 47.4 and 50.9, respectively. The lower the defensive QBR, the better the defense is at stopping opposing quarterbacks.
