The Los Angeles Clippers formally interviewed Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Dwane Casey Monday morning and plan to interview former Chicago Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro Tuesday, according to sources close to the situation.
The team is expected to choose between the two finalists shortly thereafter, although not necessarily by the beginning of the free agent signing period Wednesday night at 9:01 p.m. on the West Coast.
Casey and Del Negro were the finalists for the Bulls job two years ago, with the personable Del Negro ultimately winning out. In two seasons with Chicago, Del Negro went 41-41, then lost in the playoffs two consecutive years.
Casey went 53-69 during a season and a half stint as coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves from 2005 to the middle of 2007.
The Clippers have been without a head coach since firing Mike Dunleavy in March. Assistant Kim Hughes was named interim coach and the team went 8-25 to close out the season. Hughes was fired as interim coach the day after the regular season ended, but has stayed on with the club as an assistant coach until his contract expires on June 30.
