LaVar Ball was encouraged by the Lakers' performance in a losing effort vs. the Pelicans, saying that the team picked Lonzo up after Lonzo's great performance Friday night in Phoenix. LaVar Ball also thought the Lakers' comeback from down 21 in the 3rd quarter will help them in the long run. But he challenged Lonzo to rebound more and close better.

Defense wins championships

The Chargers were able to escape with a win Sunday vs. the Broncos despite accumulating their fewest total yards of offense in a game since 2012. It helps when the defense holds the opponent scoreless, and that's what happened in LA's 21-0 victory.

Lonzo Ball flirted with a triple-double again with 8 points, 13 assists and 8 rebounds. However, Ball struggled with his shot, missing 10-of-13 shots and all five of his 3-point attempts. He also had 5 turnovers. It was a good learning experience for Ball against the likes of Jrue Holiday with bigs like Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins inside to clog the lanes. "I thought he was good," Luke Walton said. "... I liked Lonzo's aggression tonight... those two bigs, they're monsters in there." Walton says Ball will learn how to deal with that kind of size has he gains experience.

Heavyweights clash in World Series

While the Dodgers have played in considerably more Fall Classics than the Astros, Houston's 2005 appearance was much more recent than when Los Angeles last advanced to this stage in 1988.

The Lakers' bench showed it can play game-changing defense. Luke Walton may have found himself a combination to use with Kyle Kuzma (20 points), Jordan Clarkson (24 points), Julius Randle (11 points), Brandon Ingram and Josh Hart. That unit used a 29-5 run to get the Lakers back in a game that seemed over. "I was searching to find guys that would play at that level," Walton said. "That's probably the first time that lineup ever played together. They were all fighting."

In his first game as a Laker, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope delivered the things the Lakers signed him for. He provided an offensive, defensive and energy spark with 20 points, 2 steals and a block.

The energy in Staples and with the Lakers is low at the start of this game. And the Pelicans' slow pace isn't helping the Lakers, who trailed by 15 early in second. Lakers are having to work very hard on offense with no easy baskets and are having all sorts of problems stopping Anthony Davis, DeMarcus Cousins and Jrue Holiday.
