Los Angeles Teams

The Rams scored their first touchdown of the season. If they can score one more, Los Angeles will get free hamburgers.

The Rams have their first touchdown, on the most encouraging play possible -- a 44-yard strike with Brian Quick on a post route. Easily beat his defender. Play action set up that pass. Was a big weapon for them last week, too. This is how you create space for Todd Gurley. You have to make defenses pay for stacking the box.

A nice start by Tavon Austin, another guy the Rams really need to get going. 8-yard catch on a crossing route to convert a third down, then a 14-yard flag route to the outside for a gain of 14.

Two years ago we cried for Óscar Taveras and today we do it for José Fernández. Descansa en paz mi amigo. Nuestro mayor sentido pésame a toda tu familia.

"Best D-line in football!" a Rams fan hollered from the stands. Maybe. Maybe.

Big test for this Rams secondary, which remains shorthanded without E.J. Gaines. With Doug Martin out, Jameis Winston will throw often. Dark clouds hovering, but only light, intermittent rain thus far.

Dave Roberts asked Yasiel Puig if he wanted to play today. He said yes. He's dedicating the game to José Fernández.

Jared Goff will be the backup QB today, with Sean Mannion inactive. Pharoh Cooper (shoulder), Nelson Spruce (knee), EJ Gaines (thigh) all inactive, which is significant for the Rams. Gaines' absence will probably force Troy Hill to start as the No. 2 corner. Tough matchup against a couple of 6-foot-5 receivers in Mike Evans and Vincent Jackson. Brian Quick is the No. 3 WR, after Austin and Britt. Also inactive: T Pace Murphy, TE Temarrick Hemingway, DE Matt Longacre.

Seeing the shocked, grief-stricken Don Mattingly and the Marlins in team jerseys at a televised Miami news conference a few hours after the awful news of Jose Fernandez's death in a boating accident evoked emotional on-camera interviews long ago with three formidable, longtime baseball men. Mike Hargrove, Lou Piniella and Jim Fregosi all broke down in tears when we discussed the unfathomable losses they and their teams experienced many years before of players they'd been with shortly before their passing. Hargrove spoke a decade after a Florida boating tragedy took the lives of Cleveland pitchers Tim Crews and Steve Olin in 1993 when he was the manager of the Indians. In 2004, Piniella recounted friend and teammate Thurman Munson's death a quarter-century earlier when the plane the Yankee captain piloted crashed near his home in Ohio. And in 2008, Fregosi shared his sorrowful recollections of managing California 30 years before, when Angels outfielder Lyman Bostock was shot to death in the back seat of a car after visiting a childhood friend in Indiana. There is plenty of crying in baseball today and there always will be among all who endure loss and cherish lives that will forever be with them.
