Los Angeles Teams

The Dodgers entered today with 87 wins already on the board. The most wins the Giants could possibly finish with is 87. In other words, the Giants will be eliminated from the NL West race with one more loss or one more LA win. It's Aug. 20! According to Elias, the last time a team was eliminated from its division race this early was 1998. The Giants have never been eliminated from NL West contention this early, dating back to 1969.

We've zipped through three innings already in Detroit. Eighteen up and eighteen down so far, thanks to three perfect frames apiece from Tigers starter Justin Verlander and Dodgers starter Kenta Maeda.

Another Dodgers injury note: Clayton Kershaw will throw a three-inning simulated game on Monday. If Kershaw's outing goes well, what's next? "Once he passes that marker right there, we'll see where he goes. It's probably going to be a start either with the (Double-A) Tulsa club or (Triple-A Oklahoma City) club." Kershaw has been on the DL since July 24 because of a lower back strain. The Dodgers have gone 18-3 since that time, so clearly the need for his return is desperate.

No surprises regarding the condition of the Dodgers' Cody Bellinger, who sprained his right ankle during Saturday's game. While it appeared that there was some slight swelling around the injury, manager Dave Roberts said, "He came out of it as good as expected. It was a mild strain and he'll be available to hit (today). We'll try to stay away from it but if an obvious spot comes up, we'll use him."

Sean Mannion marched the Rams 80 yards up the field for the game-winning drive in a 24-21 win over the Raiders. Mannion converted on 4th and 9 with a dart to Mike Thomas, who absorbed a helmet-to-helmet hit from a Raiders DB. Mannion then sailed a 20-yard pass up the sideline to Josh Reynolds, their long, athletic fourth-round pick, who battled for the football and won. Very good day all around for the Rams, now 2-0!8! the preseason.

OLB Carlos Thompson being carted off the field. Raiders rookie Kareem Are launched himself towards the pile, but instead caught Thompson on the left knee. Looks like a significant injury.

Rams COO Kevin Demoff sat in the CBSLA broadcast booth and said there is no update on Aaron Donald. "He's a great player; he deserves a great contract," Demoff added.

First-half stats from earlier were not updated. Jared Goff: 16-for-20, 160 yards, TD; Cooper Kupp: 6 catches, 7 targets, 70 yards, TD; Todd Gurley: 8 carries, 38 yards, TD.

About as encouraging an offensive first half as the Rams can have. Jared Goff (14-of-17, 145, 1 TD), Todd Gurley (8 carries, 38 yards, 1 TD) and Cooper Kupp (5 catches, 67 yards, 1 TD on 6 targets) all looked good. Rams were 6-for-8 on third down and picked up 12 first downs. They lead the Raiders, 17-14.

Rams settle for a 35-yard field goal by Greg Zuerlein on a long, methodical drive to begin the second quarter, and that will probably be it for Jared Goff. He was great. 14-of-17 for 145 yards and a touchdown, with lots of impressive throws. One was an incompletion, on a deep ball to Sammy Watkins that was perfectly placed but batted away. The Rams have converted on six of their first eight third-down attempts.

Sammy Watkins with his first catch for the Rams, a five-yard reception to covert a 3rd and 2. They just ran him on a screen, too, and he picked up three yards. Rams are 5-for-6 on third down.

Another really nice touchdown drive by the Rams' offense, culminating in a tough, two-yard run by Todd Gurley, who has gained 38 yards on just eight carries. Jared Goff went 3-of-5 for 32 yards on that drive, completing two passes to Cooper Kupp and another to Tyler Higbee. Goff today: 8-of-10, 110 yards, a touchdown.

Trumaine Johnson, from nearby Stockton, with an interception. Had only one of those last year. Nice job by the Rams, especially Connor Barwin, of applying pressure.

Looked like Jared Goff waited a little too long to push the ball downfield, which allowed Khalil Mack to sack him for a 10-yard loss and kill the second drive. Robert Woods was open. Todd Gurley with 24 yards on five carries and also a 12-yard catch. He's running violently.

That Raiders offense is very good. Oakland comes right back and scores, on a perfect, 19-yard pass across the middle to Lee Smith, a blocking tight end. Raiders scored on four plays. And DB Lamarcus Joyner was hit with two personal fouls. Rams had a very impressive showing on defense last week. Not so much to start the day.

Rams with a very, very encouraging first drive in Oakland, finishing it with a 23-yard touchdown pass, on play action, to a wide-open Cooper Kupp. Jared Goff went 4-of-4 for 66 yards, and Todd Gurley gained 19 yards on four carries. Two catches for 19 yards for Robert Woods, Rookie tight end Gerald Everett gained 24 yards on one catch thanks to a great inside cut in open space. Biggest takeaway: Gurley ran hard, and it set up play action. Life is so much easier for Goff when Gurley is effective.
