Back and better (and earlier) than ever

Sure, we're still roughly two months away from Selection Sunday, but then again, we're only two months away from Selection Sunday. As such, here's our first look at where teams stand in the race for the elusive 34 at-large spots in the NCAA Tournament.

Please realize that these first few weeks will be very fluid. I've tried to be as inclusive as possible while only including teams that had a reasonable chance of at least being discussed if this were Selection Sunday. If your team's not on here, there's probably a good reason (or three) -- start with the RPI and SOS numbers and work your way down.

If you have a legitimate grievance, or just like talking bubble in mid-January, send an e-mail. I read all of them that come in, but this being an analytical column, polite ones with fact-based arguments have a much better chance of receiving a response.

Note: Taking auto bids in the six major conferences and the Missouri Valley into account (and assuming the auto bid goes to one of the "lock" teams in each of those conferences) and combining those lock teams with the teams in the "Should be in" category, there are only 12 at-larges available for everyone else in the charts below.

(Please remember, per selection committee criteria, that records displayed are Division I only. Next update: Jan. 24)
