Mid-major at-large bids shrinking

The first weekend of the NCAA tournament is supposed to be about the little guys.

It's about Cleveland State taking out Indiana in 1986, and Arkansas Little-Rock stunning Notre Dame -- on the same day. It's about Austin Peay beating Illinois, and Santa Clara defeating Arizona.

But as we move to within two weeks of Selection Sunday, the list of at-large candidates from smaller conferences is growing thinner and thinner.

Siena, UAB and Temple all suffered what were probably bubble-bursting losses this week, knocking each of them off the list of at-large candidates. Utah State might have cost itself an at-large bid, too, by losing at Nevada 84-71 on Saturday night.

But the grim news for those small schools is great news for bubble teams from the six major conferences.
