Research Notes

  • Pittsburgh is now 0-5 as an 8 seed or lower since the field expanded in 1985, matching the worst record by any current Power 6 conference team in that span. Tennessee is also 0-5 as an 8 seed or lower since 1985.

  • Pittsburgh scored 55 points in 67 possessions in its loss Wichita State. It was the Panthers second-worst offensive efficiency in a game this season. They scored 42 points in 54 possessions against Notre Dame on Feb. 18. Pitt struggled on its first attempt on a possession against the Shockers, finishing with one more field goal (15) than it did turnovers (14).

  • This is the third time since the field expanded to 32 in 1975 that Wichita State won its NCAA Tournament opener. Shockers' fans might want get a jump on booking their flight to Los Angeles. The previous two times they won at least one more game and advanced to the second weekend.

  • Pittsburgh's 55 points were tied for its 4th-fewest in a Men's Basketball Championship game since the shot clock was introduced in 1986.
