Gonzaga's defense limited Southern to 16.7 percent (1-6) shooting in the final five minutes of its second round win Thursday. The Bulldogs were unable to close out Saturday's game, allowing 19 Wichita State points in the final five minutes.
Wichita State trailed Gonzaga 58-51 before Tekele Cotton made a 3-point field goal with 6:05 remaining in the game Saturday. The Shockers closed the game on a 25-12 run to pull the upset, and were 6-for-6 outside the paint. Gonzaga was 4-for-12 over the final 6:05, including 2-for-8 outside the paint.
Wichita State will be the 5th 9 Seed to play in the Sweet 16 since the field expanded to 64 teams in 1985.
