Center Jeremiah Tilmon wants release from Illinois commitment

ESPN 100 center Jeremiah Tilmon has requested a release from his letter of intent to Illinois, he announced on Wednesday.

"My family and I feel it's only fair that we hear all opportunities and not be stuck in one situation," Tilmon said in an Instagram post. "Illinois will always remain an option because of my ongoing relationship with coach [Jamall] Walker, but this is my future and I need to be certain before I come to campus in June."

Tilmon committed to Illinois in July, signing with the Fighting Illini in the fall under coach John Groce. Groce was fired last month, with former Oklahoma State coach Brad Underwood taking over. Underwood retained Walker, who recruited Tilmon, as an assistant coach. Tilmon cited the coaching change as a reason for requesting his release.

When Tilmon originally committed, the other finalists included Kansas, North Carolina, Michigan State, Texas and Missouri. Missouri coach Cuonzo Martin is from East St. Louis, Illinois, where Tilmon goes to high school.

The 6-foot-10 center is ranked No. 41 in the ESPN 100 for 2017.
