Steven Pledger banned for one game

NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma guard Steven Pledger has been suspended for the Sooners' season opener against Idaho State on Friday, coach Lon Kruger announced Wednesday.

Pledger participated in a pro-am game last summer, which is impermissible under NCAA bylaws unless the participation has been pre-approved.

The junior will be reinstated for OU's second game of the season against Coppin State on Nov. 18. Pledger averaged 10.9 points per game, 2.1 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game in 2010. He started 26 of the Sooners' 32 games last season.

With Pledger out, sophomore guard Calvin Newell Jr. will see significant playing time in the backcourt. Point guards Sam Grooms and Carl Blair could also see more time on the floor together.
